What I love & dislike in Indie Polishes... (Indie Personal Taste?)

There are a lot of gorgeous indie nail polishes out there, and I'm just starting to get a feel for what makes me love an indie polish on the nail (and not just in the bottle). Sometimes it's hard for me to purge an indie polish, because more often than not, I actually know the lovely lady who created it and how much of their heart went into it! That said, I think those creative women know that I can appreciate how beautiful their polishes are, even if I don't end up keeping them :)

Here are a few things that I love and do not live in indie polishes:

1. I dislike holographic glitter. I love me some linear holo polishes, but that's the only way I like it. This is a bit of a tradeoff, because I love how light-catching holo glitters can make a polish, but for some reason I just don't love how those holo glitters look on my nails!

2. I love hidden shimmer and glass flecks. I think this really gives polish depth and interest. It's especially a nice surprise if it's something you can't see from pictures of the bottle, but once you get it in your hands, you see it. Totally love that.

3. Glitter balance. For me, a balanced mix of glitter means either all medium-to-large glitters or all small-to-medium glitters. I don't really like the look of large hex glitter and tiny glitters in the same mix. I suppose this is because I either like to see 0% of the my base colour (totally opaque glitter polish) or ~50% of my base colour (a glitter topcoat that doesn't overwhelm the base colour). I have yet to be over the moon about a polish of something in-between.

Similarly, I find too many types and colours of glitter in one polish to be overwhelming (I could never get on board with Deborah Lippmann Happy Birthday, for instance), no matter how kick ass they look in the bottle!

4. Light-catching and shiny glitters that "glow". I am the biggest sucker for polish that glows, especially in low-lights.

5. Aesthetics. I love square bottles, professional looking labels, and clever names. I know it has nothing to do with how it looks on the nail, but man does it make me think twice about purging a polish if it is looking good in my polish drawer!

That's all I can think of off the top of my head. Are there any specific things you look for or do not look for in an indie polish? :)

(Sorry for a pictureless post... I spilled water on my personal laptop that has all my pics! I am posting from work - shhhh!)

  1. I mostly skip all blog posts about indie polishes, since they are almost all glitters, and I don't really like glitters very much at all. The rare holo indie I admire, but really, mostly the glitter polishes are just too childish. Too big glitters, too many different colours and colours that don't look good together or on the base. It's good though, I have so little money to spend on polishes that at least I don't drool after something almost impossible to acquire. I have only couple of glitter polishes myself (I prefer glass fleck) and they are to be applied over a colour, like WnW Halucinate.

  2. I'm with you in that I like glitter to be opaque or topcoat-style, not in between.   I also tend to like glitter that contain 1-4 different glitters total in a clear or jelly base - no shimmer bases with glitter - ick.  There are only a couple "many color" glitters that  I truly love, although I'm a HUGE fan of holo glitter, especially in colors other than silver.

  3. I'm not a huge fan of glitterbombs with 50 different sizes and colors, I can definitely agree with you there.

  4. I'm with you on the holo glitter, no matter how much I may love the rest of the polish any holo glitter is a deal-breaker for me.  I also like glitters to be full-coverage or 50%. Unfortunately I'll fall for pretty much any matte glitter or black & white glitter, as long as it-s in a jelly base.  I absolutely hate glitters in shimmer bases! And nice professional packaging and labeling does make a difference! :)

  5. I agree with your likes and dislikes! I love that people are creating small businesses and they really love what they're doing, but I'll be perfectly honest. Some of the polishes out there are just not aesthetically pleasing. I can't seriously be expected to fawn over every indie polish out there. Just because it has glitter, doesn't mean it is awesomesauce... some of the polishes out there looks like cat sick.

  6. OOoh, a post that really speaks to my heart, here are mine for indie glitters:

    Yays:

Milky glitters - I can't get enough of these, but it's a balance to get the opacity just right so they are translucent enough you can see the glitter, but you don't want to have to put 4 coats on

Tone-on-tone glitters - I like a mix of glitters in the same color family to give it a more unified look

Square glitters - Can't get enough of these.

Consistent bottle shapes - I so prefer it when an indie brand stays with a single shape so I can line them up all pretty together. I totally agree with you on square bottles too

Good swatches - Because indies are so much harder to find, it becomes so much more important that I can get a good idea of they actually look like

Work-friendly combos -  "quiet" glitters, like whites, greys, neutrals - any mix that isn't too blingy as I find myself far more likely to wear them.

    Mehs:

Fluffy base - If there's glitter and I have to put more than one coat on, I don't want my nails to get all thick and gluggy looking

Opaque base - What's the point of glitter if it gets drowned in a solid white or black base?

Frosty base + glitter - I know it's a thing, but there's too much finish going on. Same goes with multichrome + glitter or multichrome + holo I find (the only exception being glass-fleck which isn't as attention grabbing)

Phew, I think that's it. Thanks for the post!

  7. Nothing wrong with saving money! Though, I used to feel the same way about most glitter polishes, but I've completely come over to the dark side :D

  8. Oh I totally agree with all your 'yays'!! Tone on tone is awesome.

  10. Oh thank goodness, I thought I was just a huge weirdo when it came to holo glitters, LOL.

  12. Have you seen Pahlish My Oblivion? There's a lot of gold holo glitter, and even I am a bit tempted O_O

  13. The biggest turn off for indies is availability. Not only you have to stay up, be as fast as a hwak to snatch them up, but living in Europe doesn't help with it. Shipping isn't available, very pricey or the polish is offered in time frames I am still sleeping.

  14. :( Yeah, it's not easy getting your paws on some of the indies out there!

  22. Hiya. I noticed your blog title, "Blogger: Spaz & Squee" does not really
reflect the content of your web site. When creating your website title,
do you think it's most beneficial to write it for Search engine optimization or for your audience? This is one thing I've been struggling
with simply because I want good search rankings but at the
same time I want the best quality for my site
    visitors.
